Power to the People!!!

We see strength and weakness everyday. However, do we ACTUALLY know power is? What is power? Is it when someone uses force to get results? Is it having dominion over someone? Does one have to be in control constantly to possess power? Is showing restraint a sign of possessing power? Flood me with your opinions and your thoughts. I'm very interested in your take on this!

Sensitivity to Death

The longer Elie Wiesel is in the concentration camp, the more desensitized he becomes to death and dying. For example, he and some of the other prisoners are thinking of soup while a man is being hanged. How do you feel this relates to today's society? Do you feel that the people are less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others? What things do you see that are making people feel like death is not a big deal or that suffering is inevitable and, therefore, necessary? Are there some things you may be doing that are making this problem worse? Explain.

The Psychological Effects of Imprisonment

We've been discussing the effects of imprisonment on the Jews during the Holocaust. It is obvious that they were devastated and beaten down by the oppressive hand of the SS officers. However, readers sometimes fail to discuss the effects that the camps had on the SS officers. In looking at the Stanford Prison Experiment, how are the effects on the participants in the study similar to what is happening in the novel Night? Think about the events that take place in the study and how the participants are treated and how the guards have started to assert their power. Also, discuss what effect this type of experiment would have on you if you were apart of it? Be open, honest and thorough in your response.

The Redeeming Quality of Remorse

One very prevalent issue in the novel  Night  is the total lack of remorse felt by the Nazi soldiers after committing such heinous acts. Remorse is a deep and painful regret for one's wrongdoing. When one has remorse, one is at the very least showing that he/she is human and has a conscience. Was there ever a time when you did something for which you felt absolutely no remorse? Post a recount of the events that occurred. Looking back on the situation, do you feel any remorse for your action now? Explain.
